The 14th edition of Tauron Nowa Muzyka Katowice expands with new accompanying events! On Friday, June 21, Galeria Szara (Grey Gallery) in Katowice will host a preview of the “Heroic Trip” exhibition combined with a performance by the DMKHV electronic project.
The pieces included in “Heroic Trip” were created when two Ukrainian artists visited Katowice. Elena Subch and Viacheslav Poliakov have spent a few months living in Silesia, gathering material for their new works of art. The elements photographed in Poland were juxtaposed with photos of industrial Kherson and Chervonohrad – their hometowns. The result is a psychedelic vision that can never be separated from the world built from Polish and Ukrainian tires, mud, rust and plastic. It’s not an exhibition about escaping reality, nor an ethnographic exhibition about Ukraine or Poland. As the authors say themselves:
“When reality becomes too boring or cruel to look at, people change it into a story. In legends problems turn into adventures, dramas gain affirmative power to create the identity of cities and nations. Historian and anthropologist Leo Klejn claims that a heroic epic encompasses a sick desire to see the defeat of your own nation. In an epic poem failures can be psychologically overcome and turn into victories. Kherson and Chervonohrad are our epic.”
On Friday, June 21, Galeria Szara in Katowice will host a preview of the exhibition, accompanied by a performance by the DMKHV. This experimental project “is built up from samples, synthesis, noises, waste, trance rhythms and accidents”. Szymon Szewczyk is an audio-visual artist, scenographer and designer, whose works have been displayed at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw, BWA in Katowice and during the 2016 Warsaw Under Construction festival.
