Great personalities on the experimental R&B scene and multifaceted creators of unorthodox electronica strengthen the programme of next year’s festival. In June in Katowice we will hear the author of one of the best albums of 2022, a star of the Warp label with a new project, a strong representation of Berlin’s Berghain, queer electro from Hamburg and a trio playing techno on live instruments. Passes on sale now at our site.
Few R&B artists impress with originality to the extent that Sudan Archives does. Brittney Parks, for that is the artist’s real name, taught herself to play the violin by ear, imitating Sudanese folk instrumentalists. Her unique work moves at the intersection of experimental R&B, electronic music, African music, pop music and offbeat hip-hop. She produces, composes, plays and sings her own songs. In 2022, the artist impressed with her well-received second album Natural Brown Prom Queen. Pitchfork thought that only Beyoncé’s album was better last year, and the New York Times placed Sudan Archives’ masterpiece at number 4 on its album of the year list. Praise also poured in from the UK, France and Scandinavia. The star of the Stones Throw label charms the world with her fascinating eclecticism. Her excursions into distant musical galaxies are tied together by a coherent artistic concept and her incredible charisma, which is particularly evident during her live performances on the popular CBS talkshow “The Late Show”, hosted by Stephen Colbert. As early as June this year, we will hear Sudan Archives live for the first time at a Polish festival and this will of course happen during the 18th edition of Tauron Nowa Muzyka Katowice.
In addition to the artist from overseas, the event’s programme is joined by artists representing the wealth of strands of modern music. The line-up opens with a master of contemporary electronica hiding under the pseudonym Clark. One of the biggest stars of the esteemed Warp label returns this year with a new album, recorded with “live” percussion. The album’s producer is none other than Thom Yorke (Radiohead) himself. “The world is coming to an end and Clark writes the soundtrack to it,” wrote the influential Pitchfork website about his music. “It’s like the Beach Boys on MDMA,” – says Thom Yorke in turn about the album. We can expect similarly expressive sounds during Clark’s live performance at the festival in June.
Tauron Nowa Muzyka Katowice will also be visited by a strong import from Berlin. Answer Code Request is one of the residents of the famous Berghain. His bass-heavy techno brings dancefloor shocks to clubs all over the world. He will be joined by the unpredictable duo MMM, co-founded by Errorsmith (Smith N Hack) and another Berghain resident, Fiedel. The duo’s biggest hit is the unforgettable track ‘Donna’, which brilliantly fused 80s disco and Detroit techno, but the men also take joint musical excursions into other areas of electronica – from rave to abstract sound constructions.
Schemes are also broken by the festival’s next guests. Komfortrauschen look like a traditional rock band, but they bring the raw energy of punk to the most modern techno. The trio delivers motorik rhythms with the precision of a German factory and the hedonism of a Berlin basement. The band’s name means ‘comfort noise’, and the group performs just as well in intimate clubs as on large festival stages. Komfortrauschen have played everywhere from SXSW to Kantine am Berghain, and will also be performing at the Tauron Nowa Muzyka Katowice festival in June.
Dark and hot electro sounds will be delivered by Best Boy Electric. The person who hides behind this pseudonym can boast a residency at the cult club Pudel in Hamburg. Best Boy Electric is a DJ, promoter and selector. He is part of the queer feminist collective POSSY and makes a strong mark on the Hamburg scene. He advocates FLINTA (Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Trans and Agender). Spicy electro straight from Hamburg will add flavour to the June festival night.
This is still only the beginning of the unveiling of the programme of Tauron Nowa Muzyka Katowice 2023. More artists will join soon. Two-day passes priced at 299 PLN as well as three-day passes priced at 389 PLN are still on sale. It is worth deciding to buy now, as the price of passes increases on 1 February. Unforgettable emotions, memorable concerts, exceptional artists and a unique location – this is the shortest recipe for the Tauron Nowa Muzyka Katowice Festival. It is worth visiting again.
