A collective that emerged from an event in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as a creative collision of different artists. It is made up of musical instrument inventors from the Ngwaka district, electronics producer Débruit, Makara Bianko (also known as the Lingwala Devil) and his dancers pouring out of the Lingwala district. KOKOKO! are best known for using materials such as metal, cans, engine parts and plastic containers found on the streets of Kinshasa in their music. They transform these into lively, sculptural dance music. Their distorted, fast-paced rhythms and spontaneous, lo-fi electric sounds create a chaotic soundtrack for the city’s raw but highly creative reality. It’s a whole new scene – radical, dangerous and thriving in a country where political instability is felt at every turn. These are the rhythms of the streets of Kinshasa, Africa’s third-largest capital, an urban mosaic stretching further than the eye can see. KOKOKO! is a new, uninhibited aesthetic emanating from the clubs in the city centre, in between government-imposed power cuts.
