Creators of a true 90’s anthem, a feisty singer often compared to PJ Harvey, originators of a fusion of Parisian clubs and Arabic culture, a valued experimental producer, representatives of a new wave of jazz, and an excellent electro DJ – these are the first artists of the 15th edition of the festival. The second weekend of June 2020 promises to be very special!
Underworld are the authors of the timeless “Born Slippy (Nuxx)”. The song has become a generation anthem, after being featured in the Trainspotting film. The success of the single teleported the band to the very heart of the mainstream. Underworld have drawn for the track’s popularity, but they never gave up their artistic ambitions. They sold millions of records, played a massive number of concerts, produced soundtracks for films, and even provided music for the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. After the commercial success of their Grammy-nominated “Barbara Barbara, we face a shining future” album, Underworld returned with a series of recordings titled “Drift”. The activities were summed up on the “Drift Series 1” album, released over a week ago, on November 1, 2019. This year, the group headlined some of the leading festivals, such as Roskilde Festival, Sonar and Lollapalooza in Berlin. There is no doubt that on Friday June 12 in Katowice, we’ll hear both their most popular hits and the latest material.
Guitar sounds will be delivered by charismatic Anna Calvi, who has been considered one of the most interesting British singers since her debut in 2011. Having earned two nominations for the Mercury Prize, the artist creates dark, atmospheric and romantic pop with elements of climatic rock. She’s often compared to PJ Harvey. Anna Calvi is famous for energetic, feisty and unpredictable live performances, and that’s exactly the kind of concert we can expect to see on the June Friday in Katowice!
Saturday June 13 will mark an equally energetic, yet fully electronic live act by Acid Arab. This multicultural band was founded in 2012 in Paris, and its goal is to “create a space for Arab culture in the world of contemporary electronic music”. The result of these efforts is oriental acid, combining drum machines and synthesizers with melodies and rhythms of Arabic folk music, and thus sending the audience into a trance.
An audiovisual show fascinating with attention to details will be presented by Rival Consoles. The London-based producer is compared to the likes of Nils Frahm and Jon Hopkins. Just as them, he combines experiments with acoustic sounds and electronic music.
The audience can count on some unobvious experiences during the concert of SEED Ensemble. The ten-person orchestra was founded in 2016 in London, and is led by an acclaimed composer, arranger and saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi. Urban inspirations intertwine with the sounds of West Africa and the Caribbean, creating an electrifying jazz mix.
Another performer creating global music is Afrodeutsche. The British DJ has her roots in Germany, Ghana and Russia. Talking about her inspirations, she mentions electro, techno and Detroit house as well as piano classicism. Her sets are a true treat for the fans of the Underground Resistance style.
